David Emanuel Twiggs letter, 1861 June 1.

Letter written anonymously to Confederate States Army General David Emanuel Twiggs by a former "western" businessman living in New Orleans, La. The letter writer emphasizes the strong desire of U.S. citizens in the West to keep the Mississippi River open for trade and travel and expresses the hope that President Lincoln will use all available force against the Confederacy to preserve the river's unrestricted accessibility.
